'Teacher,' he asked, 'what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ ‘What is written in the Law?’ he replied. ‘How do you read it?’ He answered, ‘"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind"; and, "Love your neighbor as yourself."’ 'You have answered correctly,’ Jesus replied. ‘Do this and you will live.' But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbor?’ In reply Jesus said: ‘A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. "Look after him," he said, "and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have." Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?’ The expert in the law replied, ‘The one who had mercy on him.’ Jesus told him, ‘Go and do likewise.’" Meaning: The parable of the Good Samaritan teaches us about selfless love and compassion. It challenges us to redefine our understanding of who our neighbor is and encourages us to act with mercy and kindness, even towards those we may not consider our own. Scripture 2: Matthew 15:29-38 (NIV) Scripture Text: Matthew 15:29-38: "Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them. The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel. Jesus called his disciples to him and said, ‘I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way.’ His disciples answered, ‘Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?’ ‘How many loaves do you have?’ Jesus asked. ‘Seven,’ they replied, ‘and a few small fish.’ He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was four thousand men, besides women and children." Meaning: This passage illustrates Jesus' deep compassion for the physical and spiritual needs of people. It emphasizes His willingness to provide abundantly and His call for His followers to participate in serving and meeting the needs of others. Practical Application 1. Budget to Bless: Financial Planning for Generosity: Allocate part of your budget specifically for acts of kindness and charity. This preparation allows you to respond generously when the need arises. Resource Allocation: Consider how you can use your time, skills, and possessions to bless others. 2. Be Open to Opportunity: Awareness: Stay attentive to the needs around you—people in your community, workplace, or even strangers. Spontaneity: Be prepared to seize unexpected moments to extend love and assistance to others, much like the Samaritan. 3. Incorporate Inconvenience into Your Schedule: Flexibility: Make room in your daily routine for disruptions that are opportunities to serve others. Prioritization: Learn to value acts of compassion over strict adherence to schedules and convenience. 4. Cultivate Compassion: Empathy Building: Spend time reflecting on the needs and challenges of others. Engage in activities that help you understand their struggles better. Action-Oriented: Let your compassion drive you to take tangible steps to alleviate suffering and meet needs.
